1.

the species invents prophecies
all of which contain terrors

ex;

a beleaguered sun collapses into itself

2.

It's not yet night when the committee interrupts the regularly scheduled programming
and describes the inertia as unforgivable.

Outside the grief, the cardboard:
Every time you teach a computer about distance
the terrorists win.

In every scenario: No colorado left,
and survivors leave messages
for the future.

Before the last people on Earth forgot how to speak,
he thought of that day.

The committee was right
to describe space as an absence.

3.

The more artistic
of the species' prophecies include fields

Some
present ideas
such as here and there
relative to the everywhere of the other thing.

The other thing is often the cause
of whatever terror has been imagined.

The terror, of course, being another word for nothingness.

4.

someone is remembering the pacific-
a maniac fires his rifle into a crowd

later, the news interviews a woman,
"All i remember are balloons"

they say this is when things went downhill
the excess of rain
the fish falling from the sky
the balloons
filling auditoriums and beaches

5.

The species invents prophecies
all of which contain terrors

ex.

-the computers become aware
-the object gets too close
-everything was a dream all along

6.

Contact is made in code
and it's a short history of ourselves.

The scientists sit in the lab, bewildered. Have we been watched
our entire existence?

"A man first discovers gravity
but never finds a wife," the transmission says.

"Later, you will realize that all energy and mass
is a pair of eyes, and a room full of throats,
howling."

7.

the prophecies invent species
all of which contain terrors;

Epilogue: we plaque mars and abandon the rover
the twist is always that we were the monsters all along

Really good, I was reading through this thinking 'this is very innovative', and then see the Daily Deviation award at the bottom! Very well deserved. A pleasure to read as always. Let me know if you ever publish a standalone book. (i.e. I'll be sure to buy it)

The last line almost sounds like a reference to Ray Bradbury's short stories about Mars.
